Capris

Formed in Queens, New York, USA, in 1958, this vocal quintet consisted of Nick Santamaria (lead vocals), Mike Mincelli (first tenor), Vinny Nacardo (second tenor), Frank Reins (baritone) and John Apostol (bass). They were best known for the doo-wop ballad ‘There’s A Moon Out Tonight’, a US number 3 single in early 1961. The song was recorded by the Capris in 1958 and released on the small Planet Records label; however, it was not a hit and the group disbanded. Late in 1960, the owners of Lost Nite Records, one of the first labels to specialize in reissuing earlier rock ‘n’ roll recordings, purchased the master of the recording and re-released it. It was then leased to the larger, more established Old Town Records, and, owing to the revived interest in group harmony singing, the record nearly reached the top of the chart. The group re-formed and recorded further singles for Old Town and the Mr. Peeke label, but although three reached the charts, they never had another hit. The group has stayed together since the early 60s, however, and in 1982 recorded an album for Ambient Sound Records that included an update of their hit. ~ Rovi
