Doc Severinsen has achieved the status of an American icon during his six decade career as conductor, trumpet soloist and bandleader. He rose to fame as music director of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, a post he held for 25 of the program's 30 years, and has since conducted and performed with major orchestras throughout the U.S. and Canada. From 1993 to 2007 he served as the Minnesota Orchestra's principal pops conductor, and he has subsequently taken the title of pops conductor laureate. He leads annual Jingle Bell Doc concerts and has appeared here twice in recent seasons with his Latin band, El Ritmo de la Vida, now known as the San Miguel Five-a group he formed after moving to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 2006. With more than 30 albums to his credit, Severinsen has recorded everything from big band and jazz-fusion to classical works. In 1997 he won a Grammy for his recording Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band-Volume I. He also founded his own company, Severinsen Custom Trumpets, which manufactures the Destino, a handcrafted "dream trumpet."
